The very first line of attack that a computer may face would be to
the application that we all use to browse. These applications are known as Web
browsers and most common of them are Internet Explorer by Microsoft™, CHROME by
Google™, Firefox by Mozilla™, Safari by Apple Inc. and Opera by Opera Software.
Few not-so-common are Netscape, AOL, Sea Monkey etc.. Vulnerability to
the malware attack is directly related to the security and privacy settings.
As per the
market share of each browser, CHROME and INTERNET EXPLORER take the majority of
more than 50% web browser market. Hence it becomes
apparent that majority of
threats are always directed to security lapses among these two browsers. It’s really
important to know the basics of the security settings for these two browsers.
Below, we
have tried to simplify the settings and tweaking of the two most commonly used
browsers to fit the requirements in layman’s terms:
Internet Explorer™: It’s advisable to keep a check on the add-ons
that your browser is equipped with. To do so, click on TOOLS menu > Manage
Add-Ons > look for Search providers and browser plug-in. Highlight the
search engine that you do not want to keep and then click on REMOVE at the
bottom right corner. Remember if its Default search engine, then you will have
to select another engine and make that as DEFAULT, first.
From time to time and on weekly basis, as required (if the browser is
unstable), its good practice to reset the browser settings, clean the history
and erase the saved form option/passwords. You may do all of it by click of a
button (Tools menu > Internet Options > ADVANCED tab > RESET).

GOOGLE CHROME™: This browser being the most common browser as per the StatCounter is obvious
choice for attackers. Though various technologies implemented in this open
source browser platform, prevents the instability, yet it’s equally important
to know how to reset when the time comes.
Easiest way to reset the Chrome
browser is to click on RESET SETTINGS as described in the snapshot under
settings menu. Also, its good to keep a check on what browser plug-ins are
being used by chrome and remove the ones which are suspicious and unwanted.
